Summary
에릭 리들은 1902년 중국 텐진에서 스코트랜드의 선교사의 셋째 아들로 태어났다.
에릭은 어렸을 때 몸이 자주 아팠고, 다리 마사지를 해주어야만 잘 걸을 수 있을 정도로 약했다. 그러나 어머니는 그의 다리를 계속 주물러 주며 기도했고
5살이 되었을 때는 동네 아이들 중에 가장 빠른 아이가 되었다.
Eric Riddle was born in Tianjin, China in 1902, the third son of a Scottish missionary. Eric was often ill as a child, and was weak enough to walk well only after having his legs massaged. But his mother continued to rub his legs and pray, and by the time he was five, he became the fastest of his neighborhood kids.
스코트랜드로 돌아가 대학생이 된 에릭은 대회에서 항상 우승하며, 신기록을 갈아치웠다. 그런데 사람들을 더 감동하게 한 것은 그의 훌륭한 태도였다.
그는 언제는 시합에 앞서 모든 선수들을 찾아가 일일이 인사를 나누며 격려했다.
Returning to Scotland to become a college student, Eric always wins competitions and breaks new records. But what moved people even more was his wonderful attitude. He always visited all the players before a match and greeted them one by one and encouraged them.
신앙심이 깊었던 에릭이 유명해지자 교회들에도 초대를 받아 간증을 나누기 시작했다. 그는 원래 사람들 앞에 서서 말하는 것을 잘 하지 못했지만,
하나님이 그 목적 때문에 자신을 유명하게 해주셨다는 것을 깨닫고
사람들 앞에 나서서 하나님에 대해서 전하기 시작했다.
그러면서 그는 육상대회에서 느껴보지 못한 하나님을 더 깊이 만나게 된다.
When Eric, who was deeply religious, became famous, he was invited to church and began to share his testimony. He was not good at speaking in front of people at first, but realizing that God had made him famous for that purpose, he started to go out in front of people and tell them about God. In doing so, he encounters God more deeply, which he has never felt in athletics.
에릭은 평일에는 열심히 공부를 하고, 대회가 있을 때에는 선수로서 또 주일이 되면 경기가 열리는 곳 근처의 교회들을 다니며 하나님에 대해서 간증을 했다.
사람들은 다른 선수들과 달리 주일에는 연습도 하지 않는 에릭에게 운동경기에 더 집중하지 않으면 성적이 나빠질 것이라고 했지만, 성적은 더 좋아졌다.
Eric studied hard on weekdays, and when there were competitions, as a player, and on Sundays, he went to nearby churches where the games were held and testified of God. People told Eric, who doesn't practice on Sundays unlike other players, that his performance would be bad if he didn't focus more on athletics, but he did better.
1924년 파리올림픽 경기 대표선수 선발전에서 100야드를 9.7초로 달리면서 영국 신기록을 세우고 올림픽팀에 합류한다.
그는 100미터와 200미터 경기에서 메달을 목표로 하고 있었고, 특히 100미터에서 금메달이 유력한 상황이었다.
He joined the Olympic team by setting a new British record by running 100 yards in 9.7 seconds at the 1924 Paris Olympic competition. He was aiming for medals in the 100m and 200m events, especially in the 100m where the gold medal was likely his.
그런데, 파리 올림픽 일정이 발표되었을 때 곤란한 상황이 벌어지고 말았다.
However, a difficult situation arose when the Paris Olympic schedule was announced. All 100m qualifiers were held on Sunday.
100미터 예선 경기가 모두 일요일에 잡혀있었던 것이다.
에릭은 어렸을 때부터 선교사 부모님께 배운데로 주일은 온전하게 안식하는 날로 예배 외에 어떤 활동도 하지 않았었다. 그에게 있어서 주일을 온전히 지키는 것보다 중요한 일은 없었다.
As Eric was taught by missionary parents from an early age, Sunday was a day of complete rest, and he did not engage in any activities other than worship. He said that there was nothing more important to him than that he kept Sundays fully.
그래서 그는 금메달이 예상되던 올림픽 100미터 경기를 포기하겠다며 이렇게 말했다. “저는 주일에는 달리지 않습니다.”
연맹 관계자들도 그의 특별한 신앙심을 잘 알고 있었지만,
설마 올림픽경기를 포기하리라곤 생각지 못했다.
So he said he will give up the Olympic 100m race, which was expected to win a gold medal. “I don’t run on Sundays.” Federation officials were well aware of his special piety, but they never thought that he would give up on the Olympic Games.
그래서 국가의 지도자들 뿐 아니라 영국의 왕실까지 나섰지만, 에릭은 하나님의 법이 왕보다 더 위에 있다며 뜻을 굽히지 않았다. 도리어 400 미터 이어달리기 또한 일요일에 경기가 편성되자 가장 유력한 선수였던 에릭은 그 경기 또한 포기한다.
So, not only the leaders of the country but also the British royal family tried to convince him, but Eric did not change his decision, saying that God's law is higher than the king. On the contrary, when the 400-meter sprint race was also organized on Sunday, Eric, who was the most influential player, gave up the race as well.
성난 언론들은 ‘편협한 신앙인!’, ‘조국의 명예를 저버린 위선자’
등 갖은 비난을 쏟아부었다.
Angry media poured out all sorts of accusations such as 'a narrow-minded person of faith!' and 'a hypocrite who betrayed the honor of his country'
결국 에릭보다 성적이 저조했던 대표팀의 헤럴드 아브람스라는 선수가 100미터 예선전에 참가했고, 에릭은 그 시간 근처의 교회에서 예배를 드리고 있었다.
예배 후에 예선전의 소식을 들은 에릭은 안도했다. 자신을 대신해서 뛰었던 헤럴드가 다행이 예선을 통과한 것이다.
In the end, a player named Herald Abrams from the national team, who had a lower score than Eric, participated in the 100m qualifier, and Eric was worshiping at a nearby church at that time. After the service, Eric was relieved to hear the news of the round. The Herald, who ran instead of him, thankfully passed the round.
그해 올림픽에서 그가 출전할 수 있는 다른 시합이 있었는데, 400미터 경기였다.
그러나 100미터 선수였던 그에게 400미터에서 좋은 성적을 기대할 수 없었고, 이미 세계 기록을 가진 미국선수들의 승리가 예상되었다.
Another event he could compete in that year at the Olympics was the 400 meter race. However, as a 100-meter runner, he could not expect good results in the 400-meter, and American athletes who already had world records were expected to win.
그날 400미터 경기에 나서는 에릭의 손에는 쪽지가 하나 들려있었다.
영국 대표팀을 돌보는 한 안마사가 써준 쪽지에는 이렇게 적혀있었다.
There was a note in Eric's hand that day, as he started the 400m race. A note from a masseur who took care of the British national team read:
나를 존중히 여기는 자를 내가 존중하리라.(사무엘상 2:30)

가장 불리한 외각 레인에 배정을 받은 에릭은 여느때와 같이 경기 시작 전에 선수들을 일일이 찾아가 인사하고 격려했다.
After being assigned to the most unfavorable outfield lane, Eric, as usual, visited each player before the match to greet and encourage them.
그리고 출발신호가 울렸을 때 가장 앞서있던 선수는 100미터 선수 에릭이었다. 그러나 400 미터를 달리려면 처음부터 모든 힘을 빼면 안되는 것이었다. 그래서 처음부터 전력질주를 하는 그를 바라보는 사람들은 불안해했다.
And when the start signal sounded, the first was Eric, the 100m runner. However, in order to run 400 meters, all the power shouldn’t be taken out from the beginning. So people who watched him sprint from the beginning were anxious.
그러나 절반을 지났을 때에도 그의 속도는 줄어들지 않았고, 결국 에릭은 400 미터에서 47.6 초라는 세계 신기록을 세우며
금메달을 목에 걸게 된다.
However, halfway through, his speed did not slow down, and in the end, Eric set a world record of 47.6 seconds in the 400 meters and won the gold medal.
그뿐이 아니었다. 에릭을 대신에 100미터에 출전했던 동료 헤럴드 아담스도 100미터 금메달을 따게 된다.
It wasn't just that. Teammate Herald Adams, who replaced Eric in the 100m, also won the 100m gold medal.
기자들이 물었다. “어떻게 그렇게 빨리 달릴 수 있는 겁니까?”
그는 기다렸다는 듯이 대답했다.
The reporters asked. “How can you run so fast?” He replied as if waiting
“경기의 절반은 온 힘을 다해 달리고, 나머지 절반은 처음보다 더 빨리 달리도록 힘을 달라고 하나님께 기도를 드렸습니다.”
“Half the race I ran with all my might, and the other half I prayed to God to give me strength to run faster than I did the first time.”
하나님을 존귀하게 여긴 에릭을 하나님도 존귀하게 여겨주신 것이다.
Eric, who honored God, was also honored by God.
에릭은 육상선수였지만, 결코 사람들과 경쟁하지 않았다.
누구보다 더 잘하기 위해, 누구를 이기기 위해 달리지 않았다.
Although Eric was an athlete, he never competed with people. He didn't run to be better than anyone, to beat anyone.

어떤 사람은 에릭처럼 달리기를 잘하고,
어떤 사람은 글을 더 잘쓰기도 하고, 또 그림을 잘 그리는 사람도 있고,
목소리가 멋진 사람도 있다.
또 같이 있으면 마음을 편하게 해주는 특별한 사람도 있다.
Some people run well like Eric, some write better, some draw well, and some have a great voice. There are also special people who make you feel comfortable when you are with them.
학교나 대회에서는 1등, 2등.. 이렇게 나누는 기준들이 있을 수 밖에는 없지만
하나님에게는 성적보다 훨씬 더 중요한 것이 있다.
In schools and competitions, there are standards for dividing 1st, 2nd, etc. like this, but there is something far more important to God than grades.
정직하게 자신이 할 수 있는 최선을 다했는가?
Were you being honest? Did you do the best you could?
그리고, 함께 참가한 다른 사람들을 이겨야 할 경쟁자가 아니라 동료로, 친구로 생각해 주었는가?
And, did you consider the other people you participated in not as competitors to be beaten, but as colleagues and friends?
그런 사람은 하나님의 마음을 가진 사람이다.
Such a person is a person with the heart of God.
하나님을, 하나님의 자녀들을 존귀하게 여기는 사람이다.
A person who honors God and also honors His children.
그래서 하나님도 그런 사람을 정말로 존귀히 여기신다.
So God really honors such a person.
하나님과, 사람들을 존귀히 여기는 여러분이 되길 축복한다.

하나님 아버지,
눈 앞에 보이는 많은 것들, 존귀하게 보이는 것들 뒤로 그때에도 함께하시는 보이지 않는 하나님을 무시할 때가 너무 많습니다. 하나님을 무엇보다 존귀하게 여기도록 도우소서. 어려서부터 하나님을 생각하며 살게 하소서. 누군가를 이기기 위한 경쟁이 아니라, 내게 그 일을 맡겨주신 하나님을 위해서, 그 하나님을 존중하기 때문에 최선을 다하는 우리가 되게 하셔서. 하나님 눈에 존귀한 자들이 되게 해 주시옵소서.
존귀하신 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다.

Heavenly Father,
there are too many times when we ignore the invisible God who is with us behind the many things we see before our eyes and the things we see as precious. Help us to honor God above all else. Help our children to think of God from an early age. It's not a competition to win someone, but for the God who entrusted me with the task, He made us do our best as we honor Him. May God make them noble in the eyes of Him.
We pray in the precious name of Jesus.
